I agree with most of Michael Moore’s politics and appreciate that he has helped bring many vital issues into the mainstream. He’s done a ton to raise awareness. That said I also think the film “Manufacturing Dissent” is fair and has very legitimate criticisms of Moore’s tactics. I would hope that Michael Moore would welcome the criticism. Many people will undoubtedly have a strong opinion about this film without watching it just as most conservatives have very strong opinions about Moore without ever having watched his films (Like the previous reviewer “Bob K” who thinks this is actually a Michael Moore film). I say it is wiser to keep silent until you can speak intelligently on a subject.

The one thing the film is lacking is context. Moore is popular because the mainstream media feeds off highly polarized simplistic politics. So to talk about Michael Moore with out talking about the mainstream media and its manufactured culture is like making a film about a football player without mentioning the football game.

Watch this film but also watch Michael Moore’s films. For all the criticisms, Moore’s films are worth watching but with the understanding he sometimes plays tricks to make his point. Even knowing about his tricks I still believe that most his points are valid.

First off, I am very sympathetic to Michael Moore’s ideas. I would love to see more gun control in the US, the Iraq war come to an end, and health care for everyone. I enjoy his movies for their entertainment value and because they champion causes I believe in. His methods, however, are disturbing. How can you trust anything the guy says knowing the following: The premise of “Roger & Me” was Moore’s quest and ultimate failure to get an interview with Roger Smith. Turns out he did interview Roger Smith but decided to cover it up since it didn’t make for a compelling movie.

Manufacturing Dissent is a fair documentary. The interviews are with people from both sides. Some love Michael Moore, some hate him. But the important thing is that a lot of the people interviewed worked with Michael Moore. The movie reveals that Moore is not necessarily in search of the truth, just in search of a way to validate things he already believes to be true. This movie is great for anyone who values intellectual honesty.

See Manufacturing Dissent for its content, because its production quality will not impress.

This movie is getting a surprising amount of hate and I don’t know why. There is very little in the way of violence, even less in the way of sex and even the gross-out jokes are kept way below what is usually the minimum level for comedies lately. The bad guys get around the mall with mountain bikes, skate boards and by utilizing some impressive parkour moves. Clearly this movie was meant for the PG crowd and in that it succeeds. It’s a nice clean family comedy that everyone can attend and enjoy. There were lots of families in the theater when I saw this movie and they all seemed to have a pretty good time. They laughed and giggled and there was very little of the bored chatter you hear sometimes at kids/family movies.

I was thinking a little about the John Candy movie Summer Rental after I saw this. Candy played a few different roles in films before he did Summer Rental but that movie is where you see the classic John Candy affable lug character that kind of served as a template for most of his following roles. His characters were usually some variation of that, he did it well and people loved it. Kevin James has a similar likable quality and I’m hoping that maybe he picks up the Easy Going Good Guy mantle where John Candy left it.

To paraphrase Paul Blart himself, “Don’t write this movie off.” Like I said, there were plenty of scenes that had both kids and adults laughing together. Isn’t it worth at least the price of a matinee ticket to laugh for a while with your kids?

I had my reservations going in to see this one, but it was surprisingly funny and didn’t have to use much gross-out, potty humor or profanity that seems to be pervading many comedies these days in attempts to humor people. Instead, there was more slapstick style humor, and while it is the classic lovable loser meets girl scenario (except at the mall) and has its predictable moments, over all it was a pretty decent comedy.

King of Queens star Kevin James plays Paul Blart, a long time mall security guard who is a bit lonely in life because of failed relationships. When he sees a beautiful woman working in the mall, he tries to figure out a way to connect with her, but his awkwardness gets in the way of his progress. Training a new mall security guard isn’t what it seems to be, as this supposed high school dropout turns out to be the brains behind a massive robbery and hostage situation. It is up to Paul Blart, the only one who takes his job too seriously, to try and save the day.

The first part of the movie was funny, but some of the gags were awkward at times (trying too hard to be funny). What James brought to the character Blart was kind of a Chris Farley/John Candy kind of persona. I thought that the later half of the film was better, even though as usual you have to throw reason out the window.

Not too bad of a film, and dare I say, it might even be one you could take a date to see.

“The Galaxy Railways” (2003) is a Japanese animated TV series created and designed by pioneer manga artist Leiji Matsumoto and serves as a 21st Century take on Matsumoto’s celebrated series from 1978, “Galaxy Express 999.” It doesn’t have the same characters or plot as the earlier series, but it revolves around the same premise of an interplanetary railroad train that flies from planet to planet throughout the galaxy. Here the main character is Manabu Yuuki, who has joined the SDF (Space Defense Force), the security arm of the Galaxy Railways Corporation, following in the footsteps of his late father and older brother.

In this volume, we see Manabu as a boy in the first episode who stows away on his father’s train, and, in the second episode, joins the SDF as a young man of 20 and experiences a “time slip” which sends him five years into the past to encounter his brother during a crucial battle with space pirates. The third episode is a standard deranged-passenger-takes-hostages-on-a-train crime show; the fourth is a rather jarring ghost story that introduces unwieldy supernatural elements into an otherwise straight sci-fi series; and the fifth and most suspenseful in the volume details the hijacking by space pirates of the Railway’s chief troubleshooting train, “the Big One,” and Manabu’s efforts to retrieve it despite the Railway’s orders to have it destroyed.

The older series, “Galaxy Express 999,” had more of a fable-like quality, with animation that resembled storybook illustrations and characters that seemed to come out of some future folk tale universe designed as an allegory about holding on to one’s humanity in the face of technological advances. The main character, a young boy named Tetsuro, was on a quest to obtain a free machine body so he could live forever and avoid the violent, tragic death he’d seen his mother die. In the course of his journey, he encounters numerous people suffering the consequences of having given up their humanity to become “machine people.”

In the new series, Manabu is essentially a corporate employee, as are all those around him. He basically has to be a good soldier. Conflict is introduced when he shows initiative and defies orders in order to save lives or prevent destruction of Galaxy Railway property. He’s on a par with the junior salaryman who tries to bring new methods to the job not knowing whether he’ll be punished or rewarded. As a result, at least on the basis of these first five episodes, the series is not nearly as compelling as most of Matsumoto’s earlier work, which dealt with the romance of the individual, the loner who follows his cosmic destiny.

As intricate as the new digital animation is and as impressive as the updated designs are, I still prefer the cruder artwork of the original GE999 series. There was great beauty in it, all achieved via hand-drawings, and a sense of a magical, mystical universe out there filled with imaginatively designed creatures and strange, unpredictable characters laden with emotion and tragedy. The callow and generic young bureaucrats of the Galaxy Railway Corporation are far less interesting.

In the future mankind will venture to the far reaches of the cosmos using technologically advanced trains, prehaps the least likely method of intergalactic travel. The fleet of the Galaxy Railrays transports countless galactic citizens from one exotic planet to the next, protected by the SDF, elite force protecting the Railrays Fleet against terrorist, meteor storms, and malicious alien life.

I have enjoyed the well-priced Universal Legacy Collections featuring their classic monster films of the 30s and 40s and have been waiting and hoping for them to release the balance of their classic horror titles. This DVD collection is the one I have been wishing for. Now I will finally have two of my favorite horror films of the 1930s, “The Black Cat” and “The Raven,” on DVD.

As much as I am delighted by this set I find it an interesting and somewhat sad chronicle of Lugosi’s early film career. The disc features an early 30s film following his success in “Dracula” where he is the main star (”Murders in the Rue Morgue” 1932), two films which team him in a role of equal stature with his rival, Boris Karloff (”The Black Cat” and “The Raven,” 1934 and 35 respectively), a film which exploited the marquee value of his name but gave him a more minor role (”The Invisible Ray” 1937), and, finally, a film which saw him slip into a rather demeaning supporting role (”Black Friday” 1940) beside his old equal, Karloff.

Within eight years Lugosi had gone from full-fledged leading man to supporting actor. It must have compounded matters for Lugosi to have Karloff continue to receive leading roles while he was reduced to small supporting roles in Karloff’s films. The duo would work again in 1945 in RKO’s “The Body Snatchers” where Lugosi, again, played a minor role opposite Karloff’s much meatier portrayal. Lugosi’s career was on a steady downward slide by this point (with few exceptions like “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein”) and would continue to decline through the next decade until his death in the mid-1950s.

The best part of this collection are the earliest films (pre-1937) which represent Universal’s golden age of horror. This era saw the original “Dracula” (1931), “Frankenstein” (1931), “The Invisible Man” (1933), and Universal’s masterpiece “Bride of Frankenstein” (1935). In the early 30s Universal was a studio committed to making quality horror films. In fact, these horror films saved Universal from certain bankruptcy in the dark days of the Great Depression (Abbott and Costello and Deanna Durbin would do the same for the studio ten years later). With the support of Carl Leammle, Jr. they produced A films with good scripts, good directors (Tod Browning, James Whale, etc.), moody sets and photography, amazing makeup by Jack Pierce, and wonderful casts.

As mentioned earlier, “The Black Cat” and “The Raven” are the two films I will enjoy most on this set and they alone are well worth the $20 dollar price tag. Both films take their titles from the works of Edgar Allen Poe but, unlike “Murders in the Rue Morgue,” that is where the connection ends. “The Black Cat” is a pre-code tale of revenge and Satanism set in a spectacular art deco mansion built on the site of a bloody World War I battlefield. Lugosi and Karloff are bitter enemies who meet for one final battle of wits. “The Raven” sees Lugosi as a demented, Poe loving, plastic surgeon who disfigures Karloff and blackmails him into aiding him in a plot to punish a woman who has scorned him. Both films are perfect vehicles for their two stars and represent the well-mounted, quality horror product Universal became famous for.

These represent the Universal films outside the “Dracula” and “Frankenstein” franchises that starred Bela Lugosi–or more accurately, Karloff and Lugosi in all but one. Once Karloff entered the Universal scene a few months after “Dracula” (1931) and created such a hit with the Frankenstein monster–eclipsing Lugosi’s Dracula, the studio wasn’t keen to feature Lugosi as their horror star any longer: very ungrateful of them. So it leaves a “Lugosi Collection” from Universal largely as pairings with Karloff. “Murders in the Rue Morgue” (1932) is exclusively a Lugosi vehicle. In “The Black Cat” (1934), the two are matched. Lugosi dominates in “The Raven” (1935), while “The Invisible Ray” (1936) is more a Karloff vehicle. “Black Friday’ (1940), by far the weakest film, shouldn’t be here at all, as Lugosi only has a small role.

Since others have already spoken at length about the films, and since most people buying this two-sided disc know what they’re getting, I want to address the DVD mastering problems experienced. Many have noted that, regardless of player, films on the disc pixelate and freeze at random points. This is a problem with Universal’s DVD-18 mastering process, which has flaws that have since caused Universal to return to their earlier, more reliable DVD-9 process.

In the meantime, both this disc and the 2-DVD “The Hammer Horror Series” have more than their share of bad discs. Contacting Universal itself will serve no purpose: even though they are aware of the problem, the pressings are out there and are not being remastered. You just have to be persistent and keep exchanging defective copies at retailers–even if you have to get a refund and start again with another dealer; the films are worth it. Eventually, you *will* get one without glitches. It took me three copies from two places for both this and “The Hammer Horror Series.” Importantly, you don’t have to play through all the films in real time to know if you have a flawed copy: just scan through the films in the player at 4x-10x speed (no faster), and if there is a glitch, the player will freeze at the spot. That way, you don’t have to watch through eight 90-minute movies on every copy you try out; it will take only 10% of the time to check the set, and you don’t even have to be in the room. If you come back and the image is frozen, rather than having finished the film being scanned and having returned to the menu, then you have a bad one.
